It has been 4000 years since the first cat was domesticated. The Egyptians were the first to keep cats to control vermin and other pests to protect their food. In Ancient Egypt the cat was worshiped by gods and godesses and was known as a hunter. The Ancient Egyptians posed a death penalty to anyone who killed cats. And cats were also mummified before being buried. Although it is thought that the cat was first tamed and domesticated 4000 years ago they recently found a cat skeleton, in association with a 9500-year-old human burial in Cyprus, this suggests taming occurred much earlier in Asia.
